Ranthambore Fort

One of the main attractions of the Ranthambore Fort is the story that is connected to its history. It is said that during an invasion, almost over a thousand women once committed mass suicide or sati because they found that to be of more respect than to surrender in the hands of the invaders.The appeal of the story of sacrifice itself drags in a thousand of visitors every year. Other attractions at the Ranthambore Fort include the magnificent interiors of the Fort and its exquisite craftsmanship. There are also a number of temples inside the Ranthambore Fort. The Hammir court is a magnificent place whose acoustics can be heard till the other end of the building. There is the Gupt Ganga which is a flight of stairs leading to the perennial stream. Declared a sanctuary in 1955, it became a Tiger Reserve in 1979 under Project Tiger. The Park which covers an area of 392 sq. km. is set between the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India. Ranthambore National Park is one of the largest and most famous national parks in northern India. It is situated in sawai madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, about 130 km from Jaipur, which is also the nearest airport. The nearest town and railway station is at sawai madhopur, about 11 km away. Ranthambhore was established as the sawai madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India, and was declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Ranthambhore became a national park in 1980. In 1984, the adjacent forests were declared the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary, and in 1991 the tiger reserve was enlarged to include Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries. Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary is famous for its tigers and is one of the best places in India to see these majestic predators in the jungle. Tigers can be easily spotted even during the day Time. The park lies at the edge of a plateau, and is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River. There are several lakes in the park. It is named for the historic Ranthambhore fortress, which lies within the national park. The park covers an area of 392 km square, and is famous for its tiger population, and is one of India's Project Tiger reserves. Other major wild animals include the tiger, leopard, nilgai, dhole, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear and chital. It is also home to wide variety of trees, plants, birds and reptiles. Ranthambore is also the site for one of the largest banyan trees in India. During the past few years, there has been a decline in tiger population in Ranthambore due to poaching and other reasons. However there were some tigers who succeeded in carrying on their genes even in such circumstances. A tigress known as "Lady of the Lakes" was, at a very young age, separated from her parents due to increase poaching in the area. The young tigress was called Macchli since she had a mark on her body which resembled a fish. She grew up with great determination for ruling the jungle. She mated with a male who resided just beside her territory and gave birth to three female cubs, the most famous being dubbed 'Macchli - The Junior' in a documentary. Despite Macchli also being the name of her mother, the young cub found herself stuck with the designation. The father of the younger Macchli died early due to an unknown disease, which was confirmed when forest officer Fateh Singh Rathod saw him in Ranthambore. After this, the elder Macchli found the scent of a different male, known as Bumburam, and mated with him. She gave birth to two cubs. Baccha is believed to be her grandson


Animal Kingdom
 Ranthambore National Park  The tigers can be spotted quite often even during the day, at their normal pursuits - hunting and taking care of their young. With the strict measures that have been taken for their conservation, they seem quite accustomed to human activity and are not disturbed by it. Ranthambore has large numbers of sambar, chital and nilgai. Sounders of boar and an occasional gazelle the chinkara can be seen, as also the Indian hare, mongoose and monitor lizards. The lakes and pools at the Park are where the deer congregate and where it is easiest to see the animals. Among the other local fauna are the leopard, hyena, jackal, jungle cats, sloth bear and marsh crocodile. Jacanas, painted stork, black stork, and white necked stork are seen along the water bodies. Peafowl are found in abundance and other birds include Bonelli's eagle, crested serpent eagle, the great Indian horned owl, quail, partridge, spur fowl and the paradise flycatcher. The terrain is rugged and there are rocky ridges, hills and open valleys with lakes and pools. Ranthambore's royal past manifests itself in the picturesque ruins that dot the Park. There are lake palaces, chhatris, old fortifications and a majestic thousand year old fort on a height overlooking the Park. The forest rest house at the foot of the Ranthambore fort is located in the lovely Jogi Mahal. It overlooks a tank - the pretty Padam Talao, afloat with water lilies.

This is the largest of the all the lakes located inside the park, and the beautiful red sandstone Jogi Mahal is located at the very edge of this lake. A gigantic banyan tree, considered to be India's second largest, is near the lake.

This is one of the few temples that still practices 'tantrik kriyas'.The Kala Gaura Bhairava Temple is considered to be a holy place of worship where the wishes and dreams of the worshippers come true. Kala Gaura Bhairava Temple belongs to two Bhairav brothers, Kala Bhairav and Gaura Bhairav. Their idols are placed inside the main temple area. History says that at the time Alauddin Khilji attacked Ranthambore, King Hammir made a wish at the Kala Gaura Bhairava Temple at sawai madhopur for victory and promised to devote everything to the temple if he won the war. But he had to be beheaded due to some confusion even after winning over. Shri Mahavirji temple is in Karauli district in Rajasthan, India and is 110 km from sawai madhopur town. Earlier known as Chandanpur, this small village became famous as a Jain religious site after an ancient idol of Mahavira was excavated from its soil several hundred years ago. It was then renamed as Shri Mahavirji. This idol was excavated over 200 years ago from the same spot, after which the temple was constructed. Thousands of worshipers flock from across India to catch a glimpse of this famous statue. It has a 78 cm high copper-colored idol of Mahavir in the Padmasana posture. About 175 km away from Jaipur it lies on the banks of Gambhiri river. The main attraction of the temple is an imposing 32 ft high image of Lord Shantinath, the 16th Jain tirthankar.
